When the Pakistani Rupee Lost Half Its Value, The Separation of East Pakistan (Bangladesh), The Big Devaluation of 1972

1971-72: When the Pakistani Rupee Lost Half Its Value!

The years 1971 and 1972 were like a massive storm for Pakistan’s economy. It was the moment our currency suddenly crashed. But why did it happen? Here are the 4 main reasons behind that crisis:

1. The Separation of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) 🇧🇩

Before 1971, East Pakistan was a huge pillar of our economy.

  • Jute Exports: Most of Pakistan’s foreign exchange came from Jute (Patsan) grown in the East. Once we separated, that income vanished overnight.
  • Trade Loss: Trade between the two wings stopped, giving the economy a massive shock.

2. Heavy War Expenses ⚔️

The 1971 war completely drained the national treasury.

  • To cover defense costs, the government printed too many notes and took huge loans, which led to a massive jump in Inflation (mehangai).

3. The Big Devaluation of 1972 💸

In May 1972, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s government made a tough, historic decision.

  • The Sudden Drop: They crashed the Rupee's value from $1 = 4.76 all the way down to $1 = 11.00. That’s a 130% drop in one go!
  • Why? The IMF and World Bank pressured Pakistan to show the "real" value of the Rupee instead of keeping it artificially high. They hoped it would make exports cheaper and bring more dollars into the country.

4. Nationalization (Government Takeover) 🏦

The government took control of major banks and industries. This scared off private investors, and people started moving their money out of the country.

🛑 How did this affect the common man?

  • Inflation Storm: Prices of petrol, machinery, and daily essentials (flour, sugar, ghee) suddenly doubled.
  • The Salaried Class Suffered: People with fixed monthly salaries found it almost impossible to afford things as their "buying power" disappeared.
  • The Start of the "Brain Drain": This was the era when Pakistanis started moving to Dubai and Saudi Arabia in huge numbers. Since the Rupee was so weak, even a few Riyals or Dirhams sent back home became a large amount of money for their families.

The Bottom Line: Pre-1970 Pakistan was "Cheap Pakistan," but the events of 1972 changed us into a high-cost economy forever.
